New Study Finds Eye Exams First To Detect Chronic Diseases

A new study released shows that eye exams are often the first to detect chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension. The study, conducted by Human Capital Management Services Group (HCMS), a national human capital consulting firm, found that eye doctors detected signs of certain chronic conditions before any other healthcare provider recorded the condition 65 percent of the time for high cholesterol, 20 percent of the time for diabetes, and 30 percent of the time for hypertension.

Seniors whose diets are rich in omega 3 fatty acids have a significantly lower risk of developing AMD (age-related macular degeneration) compared to other people of the same age, scientists revealed in the journal Ophthalmology. Good sources of Omega 3s are cold water oily fish, such as sardines, anchovies, mackerel, herring and salmon, as well as several types of shellfish.

The human eye long ago solved a problem common to both digital and film cameras: how to get good contrast in an image while also capturing faint detail. Nearly 50 years ago, physiologists described the retina's tricks for improving contrast and sharpening edges, but new experiments by neurobiologists at University of California, Berkeley and the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha show how the eye achieves this without sacrificing shadow detail. These details will be published tomorrow in the online, open access journal PLoS Biology.

Forget the carrots. A nice cup of cocoa can improve your eyesight. Thirty healthy young adults showed a 13 per cent improvement in the sharpness of their vision two hours after eating 35 grams of a special dark chocolate, as compared with eating white chocolate, a study at the University of Reading found. The flavonols in cocoa have long been known to improve blood flow, thinking and blood pressure in some cases. This is the first study that has measured the specific effect of those flavonols on vision, study author David Field told the Star on Wednesday.

Profile of Dr. Pavan Avinashi

After completing his Doctor of Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Dr. Avinashi spent time doing clinic electives in a variety of settings around the world. These experiences, as well as his fluency in English, French, Hindi and Punjabi, have allowed him to broaden his scope of practice and touch on a great deal of patient types.

Dr. Avinashi has a special interest in ocular diseases, laser refractive surgery and pediatric eye care. In 1999, he successfully underwent laser surgery himself and is now better able to advise and manage his patients who are considering the procedure for themselves.

Dr. Avinashi takes a strong interest in humanitarian w
